LEVEL: Standard/Higher

LEGNTH: Two-year course (DP1 & DP2)

RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND: A grade of B or higher in year 10 music

PATHWAYS: University music study, music performance, music recording, music composition.

CONTENT:

Students will explore, experiment with, and present diverse music within four Areas of Inquiry (AOI), taking on the roles of researcher, creator, and performer.  They will document their research, their creative explorations and experiments, and their progress towards presentation of finished works, in their music journal.  The journal is not assessed but will be an important tool for all assessment tasks.

Students engage in 3 key processes throughout the course:

  • Exploring music in context
  • Experimenting with music
  • Presenting music.

Students undertaking higher level will study an additional component – The contemporary music maker.

ASSESSMENT

Student’s performance will be determined according to the subject’s grade descriptors as described in the IB outlines. Grades 1 to 7 will be used for reporting purposes.

Standard Level

Internal Assessment (30%):

  • Experimenting with music

External Assessment (70%):

  • Exploring Music in context (30%)
  • Presenting Music (40%)

Higher Level

Internal Assessment (20%):

  • Experimenting with Music

External Assessment (80%):

  • Exploring Music in context (20%)
  • Presenting Music (30%)
  • The contemporary music maker(30%)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Weekly instrumental lessons on chosen instrument/voice must be undertaken throughout the IB Music course.
