Both courses develop students’ understanding, fluency, reasoning and problem-solving processes through the Australian Curriculum. The courses are designed to support different senior mathematics pathways while maintaining high expectations for mathematical learning.

GENERAL MATHEMATICS

Key design principle: General Mathematics is not a reduced version of Year 10 Mathematics; it is a practical and purposeful pathway that consolidates core mathematical understanding, builds confidence and prepares students for the applied and problem-solving demands of Stage 1 Essential Mathematics and Stage 1 General Mathematics.

Course description: General Mathematics is designed for students who wish to strengthen their mathematical skills through familiar and unfamiliar contexts, practical applications and clear problem-solving processes. Students will develop the skills required to interpret information, select appropriate strategies, communicate mathematical thinking and apply mathematics to real-world situations.

Topics include:

Number – approximations, estimation, rates, financial and practical calculations.

Algebra – expanding and factorising, linear equations, exponentials, functions and relations.

Measurement – logarithmic scales, angle of elevation, proportion and scaling.

Space – deductive reasoning, networks and algorithms.

Statistics – claims and inferences, boxplots, scatterplots, categorical variables and bivariate data.

Probability – conditional probability, including the use of ‘if… then’ and ‘given’ language.

Assessment: Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject Achievement Standards as outlined in the Australian Curriculum. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. Students will be assessed using a combination of tests, written investigations and other mathematical tasks. At the end of each semester, students will be expected to sit a year-level common test. This assessment, together with other results, will be used to gauge student performance and readiness for senior mathematics pathways.

Special requirements: A scientific calculator is required. A graphics calculator is recommended for students who may be considering a senior mathematics pathway that requires one. The TI-84 Plus is the preferred graphics calculator model. Calculators with an authentic display are recommended.

Leads to: Stage 1 Essential Mathematics and Stage 1 General Mathematics. Students seeking entry into Stage 1 Mathematical Methods or Stage 1 Specialist Mathematics should select Pre-Methods Mathematics and must meet the school’s required achievement standard for that pathway.

PRE-METHODS MATHEMATICS

Key design principle: Pre-Methods Mathematics is not simply a harder Year 10 Mathematics course; it is a deliberate bridge between Year 10 Mathematics and the algebraic, graphical and abstract reasoning demands of Stage 1 Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics.

Recommended Background: Successfully achieve a B-grade or higher in Year 9 Mathematics.

Course description: Pre-Methods Mathematics is designed for students who are intending to study Stage 1 Mathematical Methods and/or Stage 1 Specialist Mathematics. The course retains coverage of the Year 10 Mathematics curriculum while providing an extended and enriched study of selected concepts. Greater emphasis is placed on algebraic fluency, functions, graphing, formal reasoning, abstraction and the application of mathematical techniques in complex and unfamiliar situations. Students will be expected to work with increasing independence and communicate solutions using appropriate mathematical language and notation.

Topics include:

Number – approximations, surds, indices, logarithms and exact values.

Algebra – expanding and factorising, linear equations, simultaneous equations, inequalities, quadratics, polynomials, exponentials, functions and relations.

Measurement – logarithmic scales, proportion, scaling, trigonometry, angle of elevation and non-right-angled triangle applications.

Space – deductive reasoning, circle geometry, networks and algorithms.

Statistics – claims and inferences, boxplots, scatterplots, categorical variables, bivariate data and comparison of data sets.

Probability – conditional probability, including the use of ‘if… then’ and ‘given’ language, with an emphasis on reasoning and interpretation.

Assessment: Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject Achievement Standards as outlined in the Australian Curriculum, with assessment tasks designed to extend students’ mathematical understanding and readiness for senior study.
