Proficiency in mathematics enables students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by using mathematical strategies to solve problems efficiently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Topics as outlined by the Australian Curriculum are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Number \u2013 approximations.<\/li><li>Algebra \u2013 expanding and factorising, linear equations, exponentials, functions and relations.<\/li><li>Measurement \u2013 logarithmic scale, angle of elevation, proportion and scaling.<\/li><li>Space \u2013 deductive reasoning, networks, algorithms.<\/li><li>Statistics \u2013 claims and inferences, boxplots, scatterplots, categorical variables, bivariate data.<\/li><li>Probability \u2013 \u2018if\u2026 then\u2019 \u2018given\u2019 language, conditional probability.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of each semester, students will be expected to sit for a year level common test. This assessment, together with other results, will be used to gauge student performance and readiness for the next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Assessment<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students\u2019 performance will be determined according to the subject\u2019s Achievement Standards as outlined in the framework of the Australian Curriculum. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. Students will be assessed in each of the topics using a combination of tests and written investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that a B grade or higher is required to proceed to Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics at Stage 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Special Requirements<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A scientific calculator is required. A graphics calculator is recommended for this course (the TI 84-plus is the preferred model).
