Students apply their mathematics to diverse settings, including everyday calculations, financial management, business applications, measurement and geometry, and statistics in social contexts.<\/p>\n<p>In Essential Mathematics there is an emphasis on developing students&#8217; computational skills and expanding their ability to apply their mathematical skills in flexible and resourceful ways.<\/p>\n<p>This subject is intended for students planning to pursue a career in a range of trades or vocations.<\/p>\n<p>Stage 2 Essential Mathematics consists of the following six topics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Topic 1: Scales, plans, and models<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Topic 2: Measurement<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Topic 3: Business applications<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Topic 4: Statistics<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Topic 5: Investments and loans<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Topic 6: Open topic.<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students study five topics from the list of six topics above. All students must study Topics 2, 4, and 5.<\/p>\n<p><b>Evidence of Learning<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Students provide evidence of their learning through eight assessments, including the external assessment component. Students undertake:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">five skills and applications tasks (30%)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">two folio tasks (40%)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">one examination (30%)<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The 130-minute external examination will cover questions on the following three topics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Topic 2: Measurement<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Topic 4: Statistics<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Topic 5: Investments and loans.<span class=\"\" style=\"display:block;clear:both;height: 0px;padding-top: 20px;border-top-width:0px;border-bottom-width:0px;\"><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Assessment:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Students\u2019 performance will be determined according to the subject\u2019s Performance Standards, as outlined by the SACE Board.
