Students wishing to do Chemistry B must successfully complete Chemistry A.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Recommended background:<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Successful completion of Year 10 Science and the recommendation of the Year 10 Science teacher to enrol in Stage 1 Chemistry.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Content:<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Stage 1 Chemistry, students study how atomic structure and the bonds that form between atoms determine the properties of materials. These are then related to their uses in society. They also study various chemical reactions which occur around us and which are used in the production of many of the materials we use everyday.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students develop investigation skills, and explore the interaction between science and society enabling them to become questioning, reflective, and critical thinkers.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The topics covered in Stage 1 Chemistry are:<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Materials and Their Atoms<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combinations of Atoms<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Molecules<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mixtures and Solutions<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acid and Bases<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redox Reactions<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Assessment:<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students\u2019 performance will be determined according to the subject\u2019s Performance Standards, as outlined by the SACE Board. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>For a 10-credit subject, students undertake four assessment tasks including:<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least one practical investigation (i.e. experiment and report)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One investigation with a focus on science as a human endeavour, and<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least one skills and applications task (i.e. test or similar assessment item).<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Leads to: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/curric.uhs.sa.edu.au\/index.php\/stage-2-chemistry\/\"><strong>Stage 2 Chemistry<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Level: Stage 1 SACE Credits: 10 per Semester Length: One Semester for each unit.
