{"id":786,"date":"2017-05-13T22:12:04","date_gmt":"2017-05-13T12:42:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/curric.uhs.sa.edu.au\/?page_id=786"},"modified":"2026-06-21T22:58:38","modified_gmt":"2026-06-21T13:28:38","slug":"stage-2-visual-arts-design","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/curric.uhs.sa.edu.au\/index.php\/stage-2-visual-arts-design\/","title":{"rendered":"STAGE 2 VISUAL ARTS &#8211; DESIGN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>SACE Credits: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 credits<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Length: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Full Year<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Please note:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Stage 2 students may choose Stage 2 Visual Arts \u2013 Art or Stage 2 Visual Arts \u2013 Design but not both.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Recommended background: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Successful completion of <a href=\"https:\/\/curric.uhs.sa.edu.au\/index.php\/stage-1-visual-arts-cultural-social-connections\/\">Stage 1 Visual Arts (Cultural\/Social Connections)<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/curric.uhs.sa.edu.au\/index.php\/stage-1-visual-arts-thematic-approaches\/\">Stage 1 Visual Arts (Thematic Approaches)<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/curric.uhs.sa.edu.au\/index.php\/stage-1-visual-arts-design\/\">Stage 1 Visual Arts \u2013 Design\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The course consists of three assessment types \u2013 Folio, Practical and Visual Study. Students are required to show an understanding of Design in different social, cultural and\/or historical contexts. They have opportunities to explore Graphic, Product, Environmental <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Design and Architecture. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practical skills in a wide range of media and written analysis are required throughout the course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Assessment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students\u2019 performance will be determined according to the subject\u2019s Performance Standards, as outlined by the SACE Board. Grades A+ to E- will be used for reporting purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Assessment Type 1 \u2013Folio\/Folios:<\/b> <b>two Folios of 20 x A3 pages, or one Folio of 40 x A3 pages<\/b> <b>40%<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A process of well-planned concepts, developments and resolution of imaginative and personally relevant visual ideas, answering the student\u2019s own \u2018design brief\u2019<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students are required to explore a variety of media including manual and digital applications.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Assessment Type 2 \u2013Practical\/Practicals (one final or a suite of works depending on the Folio\/s ) \u00a0 <\/b> <b>30%<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students will present one or two practical pieces in the resolution of one or two folios. These can be 2 or 3Dimensional pieces.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students prepare a written design practitioner\u2019s statement for each practical up to 500 words or one Practitioner&#8217;s Statement up to 1000 words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Assessment Type 3 \u2013 Visual Study 30%<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students are required to study an area of Design of their choice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Productive and thorough use of research skills is required.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The application of practical and technical skills and sensitive use of media, materials and technologies should be evident.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students critically analyse the work of other designers and create appropriations of these pieces, using a variety of processes and techiques.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visual Study is externally marked.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students receive grades each <\/span><b>semester<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as part of the school\u2019s reporting policy with a grading of A+ to E-.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assessment Type 1 and 2 are school-based assessments, moderated by SACE.
