Year 9 Digital Technologies

Level: Year 9

Length: One Semester

Content:

Students will explore the ways hardware and software interact to manage, control, and secure data within networked digital systems. They will develop web pages using HyperText Markup Language (HTML) for structuring content and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for design, gaining an understanding of how HTML tags differentiate content from structure.

Through various software tools, including spreadsheets and databases, students will learn how to acquire, store, and validate data from multiple sources. They will also develop coding skills using the JavaScript scripting language, designing algorithms that incorporate logical operators and visualizing them through flowcharts, structure charts, and pseudocode. As part of their programming journey, students will implement, refine, and debug modular programs, applying relevant algorithms and data structures using JavaScript.

Students will critically assess existing digital solutions as well as their own creations, evaluating them based on design criteria, user stories, potential future impacts, and opportunities for innovation. In cybersecurity, they will construct threat models and investigate vulnerabilities in software, users, or supply chains. Using data flow diagrams, students will map how private information moves through systems to determine potential cyberattack risks—such as analyzing data transmission between a user and a server in a web application and identifying vulnerabilities like plaintext data exposure.

To build digital solutions, students will utilize industry-standard software such as Adobe Animate and Adobe Dreamweaver, integrating JavaScript to enhance functionality and interactivity.

Software: Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Animate

Scripting Language: JavaScript

Assessment:

Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Achievement Standards as outlined in the framework of the Australian Curriculum. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes.

Assessment is drawn from assignments and digital solutions.

Students will be provided an Adobe Design Suite software subscription on their personal device for the duration of this subject.
