Year 9 Geography – Our Changing World

LEVEL: Year 9

LENGTH: 1 Semester

Recommended background: Satisfactory completion of Year 8 HASS

Content:

Geography enables students to consider our world today and how it is changing into the future. Students will look at the natural environment, as well as human culture and globalisation.

  • Students explore the variety of different environments and ecosystems across the globe. They will consider what causes a global crisis, with a close look at poverty, food security and sustainability.
  • Students will learn about the ways that modern societies are connected throughout the world, considering the positive ways that culture and technology are shared across nations, as well as the more damaging aspects of globalisation, such as consumerism and overconsumption.

Students will develop an understanding of how they fit into the global community, and perhaps how they can influence positive change given the crises facing the world today.

Assessment:

Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Achievement Standards. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. Students understanding and skills will be assessed in a variety of tasks that may include:

  • Portfolio to reflect on excursion.
  • Article or documentary exploring the causes and consequences of a global crisis.
  • A tourism brochure highlighting differences in cultures and communities across the globe.
  • An investigation and expose looking into a company fuelling overconsumption.
