LEVEL: Stage 2
SACE Credits: 20 credits
LENGTH: Full Year
Recommended background: Stage 1 Nutrition or any other Stage 1 Science at a C grade or better
Content:
Nutrition is a science which immerses students in the fundamentals of human nutrition, physiology and health and promotes investigation of current and emerging trends. It is the study of dietary, lifestyle, and healthy eating patterns with specific focus on nutrients in food, how the body uses nutrients, and the relationship between diet, health, and disease. Students apply knowledge and understanding of nutrition to conduct investigations and examine scenarios. Students use technologies, scientific evidence, and research to critically analyse information and make informed decisions or recommendations. They investigate methods of food production and distribution which affect the quantity and quality of food and consider the ways in which these methods and associated technologies influence the health of individuals and communities. The study of nutrition assists students to reinforce or modify diets and lifestyle habits to maximise health outcomes.
Students undertake the study of all three core topics:
- Topic 1: Principles of Nutrition, Physiology, and Health
- Topic 2: Health Promotion and Emerging Trends
- Topic 3: Sustainable Food Systems
Assessment:
Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Performance Standards, as outlined by the SACE Board. Grades A+ to E- will be used for reporting purposes.
Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types:
School-based Assessment
Investigations Folio (30%)
- One Practical Investigation and
- One Science as a Human Endeavour Investigation
Skills and Applications Tasks (40%)
- Two Topic Tests and
- One Case Study
External Assessment (30%)
- Examination (2 hour electronic examination in November).
