Content:

The course consists of three assessment types – Folio, Practical and Visual Study. Students are required to show an understanding of Design in different social, cultural and/or historical contexts. They have opportunities to explore Graphic, Product, Environmental Design and Architecture. Practical skills in a wide range of media and written analysis are required throughout the course.

Assessment:

Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Performance Standards, as outlined by the SACE Board. Grades A+ to E- will be used for reporting purposes.

Assessment Type 1 –Folio/Folios: two Folios of 20 x A3 pages, or one Folio of 40 x A3 pages 40%

  •   A process of well-planned concepts, developments and resolution of imaginative and personally relevant visual ideas, answering the student’s own ‘design brief’
  •   Students are required to explore a variety of media including manual and digital applications.

 Assessment Type 2 –Practical/Practicals (one final or a suite of works depending on the Folio/s )   30%

  •   Students will present one or two practical pieces in the resolution of one or two folios. These can be 2 or 3Dimensional pieces.

Students prepare a written design practitioner’s statement for each practical up to 500 words or one Practitioner’s Statement up to 1000 words.

 Assessment Type 3 – Visual Study 30%

  •   Students are required to study an area of Design of their choice.
  •   Productive and thorough use of research skills is required.
  •   The application of practical and technical skills and sensitive use of media, materials and technologies should be evident.
  •   Students critically analyse the work of other designers and create appropriations of these pieces, using a variety of processes and techiques.
  •   Visual Study is externally marked.

Students receive grades each semester, as part of the school’s reporting policy with a grading of A+ to E-.

Assessment Type 1 and 2 are school-based assessments, moderated by SACE. Assessment Type 3 is externally marked by SACE.

Subject Fee: Printing fee of $50 to printer line.

An optional study tour will be offered to Sydney or Melbourne in term 1 or term 2.

It is highly recommended that students have access to Adobe Creative Cloud Software (i.e. Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign) at home. Unley High School is now able to offer an annual license for the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, which is available from Student Services for $10.00 per annum.
