Content:
Students explore ancient civilisations from around the world ranging from 3000 BCE to 907 CE. Students will use a range of tools to investigate the lives, cultures, and societies of the ancient world including innovative technologies and contemporary media (e.g. film). Students will also consider implications for the modern day and evaluate how we are impacted and influenced by societies who have come before us. Completion of this course will support students to continue Ancient Studies or Modern History at Stage 1.
Assessment:
Student performance will be determined according to the subject’s Achievement Standards. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. Student understanding and skills will be assessed in a variety of tasks that may include:
- Histories of Mysteries: An investigative report on an ancient mystery or conspiracy
- Based on a True Story? A multimodal presentation evaluating the accuracy of the film Pompeii in comparison to historical evidence.
- Crime or Conservation? An investigation into the handling of ancient artifacts in the modern day. Who is responsible for caring for ancient artifacts? Where should they be housed? When does graverobbing become archaeology? To be responded in a persuasive text.
- Independent inquiry: A free choice historical inquiry into an aspect of the ancient world. To be responded in essay form, or multi-modal equivalent.
