Recommended background: Students undertaking this course should be considering a pathway within the Hospitality industry.

Content:

Students will complete competencies towards Cert II Hospitality.  The course will give students hands-on practical training using industry quality espresso machines and coffee grinders in the preparation of black and milk coffees.  Students will also focus on food skills that value-add to the coffee experience, will study food hygiene and the preparation of sandwiches, baguettes, cakes and muffins and be required to assist in running the café for select school activities.  Students will gain valuable skills to assist them with either part time employment or as a stepping stone into a career in the hospitality/commercial cookery industry.

Selection Process:

Students will need to complete and return the Café & Barista Skills expression of interest form and the commitment to pay form.  Applicants may also be interviewed to gauge genuine interest in pursuing VET at Stage 1 and/or a career in Food & Hospitality.  School reports and attendance data as well as student responses on the EOI form will also be used to gauge suitability.

Assessment:

This subject is a VET subject.  Assessment is competency based against 4 units of competence from Cert II Hospitality training package. Students will not receive an A – E grade but will receive a VET report against progress. Competency is assessed in multiple ways but will include both practical and theory assessments. Please also note that this subject requires application of medium-high level literacy skills as the theoretical assessment utilises written reflections and significant reading comprehension formats. Upon completion of all units, students will receive a Statement of Attainment.
