Level: Year 10
Length: One Semester or a Full Year
Recommended background: Completion of Year 9 Art or Year 9 Design.
Content:
“Let’s prove that the pen is mightier than the sword as we embark on a journey through the world of virtues.”
In Year 10 Visual Art, you will explore a range of art practices in preparation for Senior Art pathways. The course includes creative skill-building tasks, Visual Study, and folio development leading to the creation of a major artwork.
Practical work offers the opportunity to experiment with materials and techniques, make connections between historical and contemporary practices, and begin to develop a personal and creative visual language. You will experiment with a broad range of media such as drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, sculpture, assemblage, and/or digital art.
The course explores technical and expressive approaches to artmaking through the study of a wide range of artistic movements and concepts. These may include historical styles such as Classicism, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism in Semester 1, and 20th-century movements like Surrealism, Dada, Pop Art, and Op Art in Semester 2.
Students who choose to study the subject for a full year will benefit from a broader and more in-depth exploration of art practices. By extending their study across both semesters, students will not repeat the same media, historical styles, or movements, but will instead continue to build confidence and expand their understanding through new experiences and content.
Semester A
The focus will be on developing technical skills and exploring rational concepts through the study of key art movements that shaped the history of Fine Art. You will investigate movements such as Classicism, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism, making connections between historical styles and contemporary practice.
Semester B
The focus will be on expressive and emotional concepts in art. You will study major 20th-century movements such as Surrealism, Dada, Pop Art, and Op Art, while continuing to develop their practical work through experimentation and personal interpretation.
Assessment:
Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Achievement Standards as outlined in the framework of the Australian Curriculum. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. This includes assessment of achievement in exploring and responding, developing practices and skills, creating and making, presenting and performing.
Special Requirements:
Students are required to supply an A3 display folio.
