Year 10 Gateway2Trades (EIF)

Course Length: One semester, one day per week on Wednesdays 8:45am – 12:50pm

Cost: $200 which includes all materials, Hi Vis shirt and White Card and all excursions

Description:

The Gateway2Trades course provides valuable preparation for Year 10 students contemplating future studies in any construction trade related area. In this course, students will gain an appreciation of the range of construction trades that are available and the wide variety of career options and tertiary study options that a trade can lead to. The course will assist students in building their knowledge base and developing work-ready skills in a simulated trade context.  This course will be tied to students SACE compulsory EIF which will be specifically tailored to trades and the construction industry.  Students will be given the opportunity to undertake work experience and go on building site tours to gain a full understanding of the range of different trades & careers within construction.   

Pathways:

After completing the Gateway2Trades course, in Year 11 students may elect to continue into VET courses in Certificate I in Construction (General, Plumbing or Carpentry focus), Certificate II in Engineering Pathways, Cert II Automotive Servicing, Cert II Electrotechnology or a range of other trade-based VET courses.

Further Information:

It is necessary for students to wear safety footwear at all times in the workshop.  Students will need to provide their own safety boots.  These will also be essential for any work experience and VET courses at Year 11.  Students will also need long pants.  A Hi Vis shirt will be provided.

Safety glasses, earmuffs, dust masks and aprons are supplied when needed.

Selection process:

Students will need to complete and return the Gateway2Trades expression of interest form and the commitment to pay form.  All applicants will then be interviewed to gauge genuine interest in pursuing VET at Stage 1 and a career in trades.  School reports and attendance data as well as student responses on the EOI form will also be used to gauge suitability.

Assessment:

Students’ performance for the EIF subject components will be determined according to that subject’s Achievement Standards as outlined in the SACE framework with grading of A-E. Students’ performance for the practical components of Gateway2Trades will be graded using HSU (High/Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) indicators as this is pre-VET skill building.
