Recommended background: Students are accepted into the course through a selection process. Membership to the school rowing club is also a prerequisite.
Content:
This course is aimed at students with demonstrated skills and commitment in rowing who wish to spend time in further developing the skills and knowledge associated with scull rowing in singles, doubles and quads. The skills associated with sweep rowing are also introduced.
Students will be given the opportunity to:
- Foster sound scull rowing technique to a high level of competency, efficiency and consistency
- Learn the basics of sweep rowing
- Utilise the learned knowledge and understanding of the major principles associated with correct technique to coach and correct skill error in novice rowers
- Learn specific principles to safely undertake a strength and conditioning program
- Develop a high level of fitness in accordance with the demands of the sport
- Develop a high level of organisational and interpersonal skills.
Theory topics will include coaching beginner level rowers, acute/chronic responses to exercise, rowing as part of Australia’s sporting culture, drugs in sport, and analysis of fitness, technique and races. Students will also undertake the Australian Sports Commission Coaching General Principles course and the ASADA Level 1 Anti-Doping course.
Additionally, students will participate in Health lessons based on the SHINE SA program.
Rowing as a subject requires students to be motivated academically and physically. All students in the course are expected to maintain an appropriate standard of behaviour and a positive attitude to school, sport and study.
Assessment:
Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Achievement Standards as outlined in the framework of the Australian Curriculum. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. Students will be assessed in the following areas throughout each semester:
- Practical skills & performance fitness appraisals
- Commitment / attitude / effort / collaboration /communications skills
- Written and multi-modal assessment tasks on topics covered
Special Requirements:
Unley High School PE/Rowing uniform must be worn to all practical and fitness lessons.
Subject Fee:
A subject levy of $300 covers hire of buses, instructors and an equipment
