Year 7 Rowing

Recommended background:  Students are accepted into this course through a selection process. Membership of the school rowing club is also a prerequisite.

Content:

This course is aimed at students who are accepted into the Special Interest Rowing program and seeks to develop their rowing skills and knowledge in crew boats, and single and double sculls where appropriate progress is evident. 

Students will be given the opportunity to:

  • Learn boat handling, rigging, safety skills and rowing terminology.
  • Learn scull rowing technique with a satisfactory level of competency, efficiency and consistency.
  • Gain knowledge and understanding of the major principles associated with correct technique.
  • Develop knowledge of improving technique and fitness using the rowing ergometer.
  • Participation in selected physical education activities.

Theory topics will include components of fitness, fitness for rowing, rules, etiquette and race preparation, rowing terminology, culture and values, utilising technology for feedback, tactics and strategies and roles in sport; with a particular emphasis on the role of the coxswain. 

Additionally, students will participate in a Relationships and Sexual Health unit, which is based on the SHINE SA program and aims to improve the students’ ability to develop healthy relationships and make well informed and safe decisions in the future.

Rowing as a subject requires students to be motivated academically and physically. All students in the course are expected to maintain an appropriate standard of behaviour and a positive attitude to school, sport and study.

Assessment:

Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Achievement Standards as outlined in the framework of the Australian Curriculum. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes.

Students will be assessed in the following areas throughout each semester:

  • Practical skills & performance fitness appraisals
  • Commitment / attitude / effort / collaboration / communication skills
  • Written and multi-modal assessment tasks on topics covered

Special Requirements:

Unley High School PE/Rowing uniform must be worn to all practical and fitness lessons.

Subject Fee: 

A subject levy of $450 covers hire of buses, instructors and an equipment levy. Leads to: Year 8 Rowing
