RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND:
Students can nominate to study Music as a one semester subject through the Subject Selection enrollment process prior to starting in Year 7. Student/parent/teacher interviews will be held in Term 4 to decide on instrument selection for all students, as continuing learners, or beginners.

Unley High School is looking for music students who are ready to develop their passion for music making, performance and composition. The Year 7 Music class offers students the opportunity to engage with our classroom music program as a Semester subject, as well as instrumental lessons for the whole year. Students also have the option to extend their skills in performance through the various school ensembles, including Concert Bands, Orchestra, Stage Band, Vocal Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, String Ensemble, Jazz Combo, Rock Bands and Music Production Club.
Continuing Music students can choose to learn instruments from the following list:
- Woodwind: Flute, Clarinet, Alto and Tenor Saxophone
- Brass: Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba
- Percussion: Drum Kit, Tuned and Untuned Percussion. Group lessons are free however, one-on-one lessons can be arranged via our private music instructor, cost is $37 per half hour lesson
- Bass Guitar: Group lessons are free however, one-on-one lessons can be arranged via our private music instructor, cost is $37 per half hour lesson
- Strings: Violin, Viola and Cello
- Voice: Contemporary
- Piano: Piano students are encouraged to learn a second instrument for ensemble performance one-on-one lessons can be arranged via our private music instructor, cost is $37 per half hour lesson
- Classical Guitar: Group lessons are free however, one-on-one lessons can be arranged via our private music instructor, cost is $37 per half hour lesson
Beginner Music students can choose to learn instruments from the following list:
- Woodwind: Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone
- Brass: Trumpet, Trombone
- Percussion: Drum Kit and Percussion
- Bass Guitar
Students may also choose to learn a second instrument, these lessons can be arranged on application.
Student/parent/teacher meetings will be held to gain further background on students’ music experience and interests, which will also include instrument allocation in preparation for the beginning of the school year. Students will be placed into a class according to instrumentation. These will be Concert Band, Strings and Voice specialisations. Instruments not listed below will be considered and discussed during these meetings.
Music provides authentic experiences for students to practise and demonstrate the Unley High School values of respect, excellence, diversity and community.
Assessment:
Students will engage in a variety of assessments types and methods:
- Music Performance – Class Ensembles/Band, School Ensembles and Solo Performance
- Music Appreciation
- Musical Literacy and Composition/Songwriting
- Reflecting and Evaluating Music Performance
Special Requirements
Students must:
- Attend a Parent/teacher interview in the previous year to starting at Unley High School
- Attend instrumental lessons with a qualified teacher provided by the DfE Instrumental Music programs provided free of charge, one-on-one piano lessons do have a cost however.
- Provide their own instrument or hire an instrument through the school’s hire program
- Purchase required tutor book for Instrumental Lessons and Band rehearsal
