RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND:
It is recommended that students wishing to undertake this course have studied Year 9 Music. However, provision exists for students who have been studying a musical instrument outside of class to join the Year 10 Music class. Please contact the Arts Coordinator or Music Teacher for further enrolment requirements.
Content:

This course is designed for students who have been studying an instrument with a specialised teacher for 1 to 2 years. Focus on further developing your instrumental skills in both solo and ensemble settings, songwriting and composition. The aim is to create a pathway into SACE Stage 1 and 2 Music, both Advanced Music, Music Experience and Ensemble Performance. Many opportunities to perform to an audience as part of the course work and assessment are available. It is expected that students will attend and participate in performances, and after hours commitment to personal practice is essential for success. Students will have instrumental lessons for the full year and the option to extend their skills in performance through the various school ensembles, including Concert Bands, Orchestra, Stage Band, Vocal Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, String Ensemble, Jazz Combo, Rock Bands and Music Production Club.
Available instruments are:
- Woodwind: Flute, Clarinet, Alto, Tenor Baritone Saxophone
- Brass: Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba
- Percussion: Drum Kit, Tuned and Untuned Percussion. Group lessons are free however, one-on-one lessons can be arranged via our private music instructor, cost is $37 per half hour lesson
- Bass Guitar: Group lessons are free however, one-on-one lessons can be arranged via our private music instructor, cost is $37 per half hour lesson
- Strings: Violin, Viola and Cello
- Voice: Contemporary
- Piano: Piano students are encouraged to learn a second instrument for ensemble performance one-on-one lessons can be arranged via our private music instructor, cost is $37 per half hour lesson
- Guitar: Classical, Electric and Acoustic Guitar (one-on-one lessons can be arranged via our Private Music Instructor, cost is $37 per half hour lesson)

Assessment:
Students will engage in a variety of assessments types and methods:
- Music Performance – Class Ensembles/Band, School Ensembles and Solo Performance
- Musical Literacy and Composition/Songwriting
- Music Appreciation and Analysis
- Studio Recording and Live Sound
- Reflecting and Evaluating Music Performance
Special Requirements:
Students must:
- Attend instrumental lessons with a qualified teacher
- Provide their own instrument or hire an instrument through the school’s hire program
- Purchase required tutor book for Instrumental Lessons and Band rehearsals
