STAGE 1 MUSIC ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE

Length: Full Year

SACE Credits 10 credits (Delivered offline across the full year)

Students must have previous experience in performing in an ensemble as well as have been receiving instrumental lessons.

Perform, Rehearse and Create – Stage 1 Music Ensemble Performance is designed for students that have developed a commitment to one of the school ensembles and is all about collaboration, creativity, and connection. 

Students can choose from the following ensembles:

  • Concert Band 1 or 2 
  • Stage Band
  • Orchestra
  • Vocal Ensemble
  • Percussion Ensemble
  • String Ensemble
  • Jazz Combo
  • Rock Band 1 or 2

Students will learn practical performance skills on their chosen instrument within an ensemble to demonstrate their performance and musical literacy skills. In addition they will:

  • Attend weekly instrumental/vocal lessons with an accredited teacher and maintain regular instrumental/vocal practice.
  • Participate in regular rehearsals and the performances of an ensemble 

It is suggested this course be taken in conjunction with Stage 1 Music wherever possible to maintain pathways to all the Stage 2 Music subjects.

Students will have instrumental lessons for the full year, available instruments for study are:

  • Woodwind: Flute, Clarinet, Alto, Tenor Baritone Saxophone
  • Brass: Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba
  • Percussion: Drum Kit, Tuned and Untuned Percussion. Group lessons are free however, one-on-one lessons can be arranged via our private music instructor, cost is $37 per half hour lesson
  • Bass Guitar: Group lessons are free however, one-on-one lessons can be arranged via our private music instructor, cost is $37 per half hour lesson
  • Strings: Violin, Viola and Cello
  • Voice: Contemporary
  • Piano: Piano students are encouraged to learn a second instrument for ensemble performance one-on-one lessons can be arranged via our private music instructor, cost is $37 per half hour lesson
  • Guitar: Classical, Electric and Acoustic Guitar (one-on-one lessons can be arranged via our Private Music Instructor, cost is $37 per half hour lesson)

Music provides authentic experiences for students to practise and demonstrate the Unley High School values of respect, excellence, diversity and community.

Pathways: This subject prepares students for further study in music at a tertiary level and supports career pathways in performance, composition, music education, and the broader creative arts industry. Study | Elder Conservatorium of Music | University of Adelaide 

Assessment: Assessment at Stage 1 is school based. Students will be assessed against the SACE Stage 1 Music Performance Standards. Students will provide evidence of their learning through four assessments. 

  • AT1: At least three creative works (performances) (80%)
  • AT2: At least one musical literacy task (eg analysis, critique, evaluation) (20%)

Special Requirements:

Students must:

  • Attend a Parent/teacher interview in the previous year to starting at Unley High School
  • Attend instrumental lessons with a qualified teacher provided by the DfE Instrumental Music programs provided free of charge, some private lessons are available to be set up as a user pay arrangement.
  • Provide their own instrument or hire an instrument through the school’s hire program
  • Purchase required tutor book for Instrumental Lessons and Band rehearsal
