Stage 1 General Mathematics A & B

SACE Credits: 10 credits per semester

Length: 1 semester or full year

Recommended Background: Successful completion of Year 10 Mathematics.

Students wishing to study General Maths B must successfully complete General Maths A.

Content:

Students learn business-orientated mathematical skills such as calculating areas and volumes in practical problems and collecting and analysing data.

Topics include:

  • Investing and Borrowing
  • Measurement
  • Statistical Investigations
  • Applications of Trigonometry
  • Linear and Exponential Functions and their Graphs
  • Matrices and Networks

At the end of each semester students will be expected to sit for an exam. This assessment, together with other results, will be used to gauge student performance and readiness for Stage 2.

Assessment:

Students will be assessed using a combination of tests and assignments with a weighting of 65% and 35% respectively. Their performance will be determined according to the subject’s Performance Standards as outlined by the SACE Board. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. The SACE Board advises that it is compulsory for students to pass, with a C grade or higher, at least one semester of Stage 1 Maths.

Please note that a B grade or higher is required to proceed to General Maths at Stage 2.

Special Requirements:

A graphics calculator is required for this course and students are expected to purchase one that is SACE approved (the TI 84-plus is the preferred model). We recommend one with an authentic display.
