Stage 1 Mathematical Methods A & B

SACE Credits: 10 credits per semester

Length: full year

Recommended Background: Successful completion of Year 10 Maths at B grade or higher.

Students wishing to study Maths Methods B must successfully complete Maths Methods A.

Content:

Teaching and learning activities within this course will help to develop analytical and problem-solving skills and focus on developing a sound conceptual knowledge of mathematical concepts and relationships. Students will be provided with opportunities to consider mathematical models and key ideas through a selection of problems posed.

Topics include:

  • Functions and Graphs
  • Polynomials
  • Trigonometry
  • Counting and Statistics
  • Growth and Decay
  • Introduction to Differential Calculus

At the end of each semester students will be expected to sit for an exam. This assessment, together with other results, will be used to gauge student performance and readiness for Stage 2.

Assessment:

Students will be assessed using a combination of tests and assignments with a weighting of 75% and 25% respectively. Their performance will be determined according to the subject’s Performance Standards as outlined by the SACE Board. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. The SACE Board advises that it is compulsory for students to pass, with a C grade or higher, at least one semester of Stage 1 Maths.

Please note that a B grade or higher is required to proceed to Maths Methods at Stage 2.

Special Requirements:

A graphics calculator is required for this course and students are expected to purchase one that is SACE approved (the TI 84-plus is the preferred model). We recommend one with an authentic display.
