SACE Credits: 10 credits
Length: One Semester
In Ancient Studies, students learn about the history, literature, society, and culture of ancient civilisations, which may include those of Asia–Australia, the Americas, Europe, and Western Asia/North Africa, and the classical civilisations of Greece and Rome. Through their study, students consider the environmental, social, economic, religious, cultural, and aesthetic aspects of societies. Students also explore the ideas and innovations that shape and are shaped by societies.
Students critically engage with texts, including literary texts, and analyse archaeological sources, and primary and secondary historical sources. Students develop the inquiry skills that enable them to challenge or confirm beliefs, attitudes, and values in the ancient world.
Contemporary societies have a long heritage based on civilisations of the past. The study of ancient cultures, therefore, enables students to explore the universality and diversity of human experience and enhance their own cultural and intercultural understanding.
Assessment: Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Performance Standards, as outlined by the SACE Board. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. Students understanding and skills will be assessed in a variety of tasks that may include:
- Three skills and applications tasks (75%) that explore the subject. These may include:
- Creation of virtual museums and source analyses
- Analysis of modern adaptations of ancient myths and legends
- Historical essays and debate
- The study and practice of archaeology
- One historical inquiry task (25%)
A free choice investigation into a feature or specific society from the ancient world.
