Year 10 Maths Plus

Length: One Semester

Recommended Background: Successful completion of Year 9 Maths at B grade or higher. Students will also have completed a semester of Year 10 Mathematics.

Content:

In Year 10, students consider pathways to studying senior secondary mathematics. The Maths Plus course will further develop students’ mathematical knowledge and skills in preparation for studying Stage 1 Mathematical Methods and Stage 1 Specialist Mathematics.

Topics as suggested by the Australian Curriculum are:

  • Number – fractional exponents and surds
  • Algebra – discriminant, irrational roots, trigonometric functions
  • Space – circle theorems
  • Probability – counting principles

At the end of the semester, students will be expected to sit for a year level common test. This assessment, together with other results, will be used to gauge student performance and readiness for the next year.

Assessment:

Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Achievement Standards as outlined in the framework of the Australian Curriculum. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. Students will be assessed in each of the topics using a combination of tests and written investigations.

Special Requirements:

A graphics calculator is highly recommended for this course (the TI 84-plus is the preferred model). We recommend one with an authentic display.
