Level: Year 10
Length: One Semester
Recommended Background: Successful achieve a B grade in Semester 1 of Year 10 Maths combined with the endorsement of the current Maths classroom teacher
In Year 10, students consider pathways to studying senior secondary mathematics. The Maths Plus course will further develop students’ mathematical knowledge and skills in preparation for studying Stage 1 Mathematical Methods and Stage 1 Specialist Mathematics.
Topics as suggested by the Australian Curriculum are:
- Number – fractional exponents and surds
- Algebra – discriminant, irrational roots, trigonometric functions
- Space – circle theorems
- Probability – counting principles
At the end of the semester, students will be expected to sit for a year level common test. This assessment, together with other results, will be used to gauge student performance and readiness for the next year.
Assessment:
Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Achievement Standards as outlined in the framework of the Australian Curriculum. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. Students will be assessed in each of the topics using a combination of tests and written investigations.
Special Requirements:
A graphics calculator is required for this course (the TI 84-plus is the preferred model). We recommend one with an authentic display.
