LENGTH: Full Year – includes free instrumental tuition

Recommended background: To undertake Music in Year 10, most students have successfully completed a full year of Year 9 Music.

Content:

Year 10 Music focuses on creating and understanding music. Students:

  • Learn an instrument for the full year and apply these skills in rehearsals, ensemble performances, solo performances and small group contexts, with an increased focus on musicianship and creativity.
  • Learn music theory, harmony and aural skills.
  • Analyse how the elements of music are used in different musical styles and apply this knowledge in their own performances and compositions. Styles could include Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century, Jazz, Reggae, Funk, Rock, Pop and/or Rhythm and Blues.
  • Discuss and evaluate learning strategies employed in their practice and preparation for performances.
  • Commence the formal study of arranging techniques using notation software.
  • May also study Music in Film and experiment with musical elements to produce original soundscapes and/or short film soundtracks.

These are achieved through musical experiences that encourage collaboration and creative problem-solving, the acquisition of instrumental skills, knowledge and understanding, and the development of aesthetic awareness.

Music provides authentic experiences for students to practise and demonstrate the Unley High School values of respect, excellence, diversity and community.

Year 10 music students are strongly encouraged to participate in one or more of the school’s co-curricular ensembles to enhance and extend their performance experiences. Information about the school’s co-curricular ensembles is provided by the music faculty each year.

Assessment:

Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Achievement Standards as outlined in the framework of the Australian Curriculum. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes.

Students will be assessed in a variety of tasks including:

  • Solo performances
  • Ensemble performances
  • Musical literacy tests
  • Compositions
  • Arrangements
  • Reflections
