Year 7 Humanities & Social Sciences (HASS)

LEVEL: Year 7

LENGTH: Full Year Compulsory

Content:

Students study the Year 7 Australian Curriculum HASS course. This involves students studying History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship and Economics and Business.

The History component involves students studying history from the time of the earliest human communities to the end of the ancient period (60,000 BCE – c.650 CE). Students will study the histories and significance of First Nations people and the events, developments and achievements connected to individuals in Australia. They also study the cultural practices of Roman society focusing on the way it was organised through many avenues including the analysis of artefacts, mysteries and other historical sources.

The Geography component involves students studying two topics: Water in the World, and Place and Liveability. In Water in the World students study the ways our society utilises water, sustainability issues, and the responses to these and what impacts they can make as individuals. In Place and Liveability, students explore the ways our quality of life is impacted by the space available to us and learn more about the places they are from and compare two geographically diverse Adelaide suburbs. Elements of these topics are explored in collaboration with STEM and English.

The Civics and Citizenship component involves students exploring Australia’s values, critically examining cultural stereotypes, investigating the factors that influence our identity, and examining the importance of Australia’s Separation of Powers as written into our Constitution. The Business and Economics component will involve students exploring the ways we are consumers, workers and producers in local, national and international markets and a look into businesses and relevant entrepreneurial knowledge and personal budgeting and financial management skills.

Assessment:

Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Achievement Standards. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. Students’ understanding and skills will be assessed in a variety of tasks that may include, but are not limited to; extended responses, group presentations, debates and reports.
