Length: Full year
The Year 8 Greek language program builds on the foundations established in Year 7.
It is based on concepts identified in the Australian Curriculum and aims to develop students’ knowledge, skills and understandings as described in the achievement standard for years 7 and 8.
These include:
- communication skills
- literacy skills in Greek and English
- intercultural capabilities
- understanding of, and respect for, diversity and difference, and openness to different experiences and perspectives
- understanding and appreciation of how culture shapes world views and extends their understanding of themselves, their own heritage, values, culture and identity
- critical and creative thinking.
Students develop these skills through the assessment types of Text Analysis (reading and listening), Text Production (writing), Interaction (speaking) and Reflection (in English), engaging with a range of authentic and contemporary Greek language texts and contexts.
Concepts studied in year 8 include: time, journey, health and wellbeing, celebrations.
Excursion: Students also participate in an authentic cultural and language learning experience through a visit a Greek café. During this excursion, students use Greek language skills in real-life contexts by ordering food and drinks in Greek, interacting with staff, and engaging with aspects of contemporary Greek culture, cuisine and hospitality. This experience supports the development of students’ communication skills, cultural understanding and confidence in using Greek beyond the classroom.
Incursion: Students studying Greek are also eligible to participate in the Hellenic Cup Indoor Soccer Tournament held in Semester 2. This inter-school competition is hosted on site by the UHS Greek Parents Committee and brings together students studying Greek language from schools across South Australia, providing opportunities to build connections, celebrate Greek language and culture, and engage with the wider Greek-speaking community. Participation supports students’ intercultural understanding, teamwork and sense of belonging within the Greek language learning community.
Assessment: Students’ performance will be determined according to the achievement standard for Italian years 7 and 8, as outlined in the Australian Curriculum: Languages. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. The types of assessments include Text Analysis (reading and listening), Text production (writing), Interaction (speaking), Reflection (in English). Students will be assessed on two of these assessment types per term.
