Content:
Stage 1 Child Studies examines the period of childhood from conception to eight years old, focusing on issues related to the growth, health, and wellbeing of children. This course provides an opportunity to explore child development through hands-on learning, understanding their needs, rights, and growth, and discovering the importance of play and nutrition. It also investigates the impact of government policies and social structures on children’s lives, alongside contemporary issues such as child protection and education access.
Students will examine diverse attitudes, values, and beliefs about childhood and childcare, the nature of contemporary families, and the changing roles of children in a consumer society. This semester, the focus will be on the following topics:
- Healthy Eating: The importance of nutrition, addressing food allergies, and understanding packaging for early childhood food.
- Developmental Progress: Tracking children’s growth and development over time.
- The Nature of Childhood: Understanding how children socialise and develop in various environments.
- Children’s Rights and Safety: Learning about children’s rights and ensuring their safety.
Students’ understanding and application of concepts are assessed through planning and presenting healthy food options, developing learning activities, and conducting product evaluations. Collaborative group planning tasks, research, action plans, and practical food assessments are also included.
Assessment:
Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Performance Standards as outlined by the SACE Board. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes.
