Content:
Essential Mathematics offers students the opportunity to extend their mathematical skills in ways that apply to practical problem-solving in everyday and workplace contexts. In Essential Mathematics there is an emphasis on developing students’ computational skills and expanding their ability to apply their mathematical skills in flexible and resourceful ways.
Students apply their mathematics to diverse settings in the topics of:
- Calculations
- Time
- Ratio
- Earning and Spending
- Measurement
- Data in Context
- Investing and Borrowing
- Geometry
Assessment:
Students will be assessed using a combination of tests and folio tasks with a weighting of 65% and 35% respectively. Their performance will be determined according to the subject’s Performance Standards as outlined by the SACE Board. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. The SACE Board advises that it is compulsory for students to pass, with a C grade or higher, at least one semester of Stage 1 Maths. Students who do not attain a C grade or higher in Essential Mathematics A will be required to complete Essential Mathematics B.
Special Requirements:
A scientific calculator is required. We recommend one with an authentic display.
Leads to: This course can lead to Stage 2 Essential Maths for those students who complete a full year to a high standard.
