Stage 1 Modern History

Content:

Students will study two historical topics during the semester. Student voice is integral to the enjoyment and success within Modern History, therefore students can elect to study two of the following four topics: The Russian Revolution; The Struggle for Peace in the Middle East; The Holocaust; or the anti-War Vietnam Movement. The topics offered are intended to provide students with a better understanding of some of the contemporary geopolitical issues facing society today. They will also enhance student’s historical inquiry, sources analyses, literacy and research skills. 

Students will examine changes that have occurred globally since 1750. This subject provides the opportunity to examine developments of significance that had short or long term on a impacts on individuals and societies. Students are provided the opportunity to challenge how political structures, social organisation, and economic models have played a role in shaping our world today.

Assessment:

Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Performance Standards, as outlined by the SACE Board. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. Students understanding and skills will be assessed in a variety of tasks that may include:

  • Three historical skills tasks (70%) that explore the topics. These may include:
    • Historical film analysis
    • Sources analysis 
    • Historical Essay
    • Empathy response 
  • One historical study task (30%).
