Stage 1 Music

Level: Stage 1

SACE Credits: 20 credits (10 credits may be negotiated on an individual basis)

Length: Full Year 

Recommended background: To undertake Stage 1 Music students should have successfully completed a full year of Year 10 Music or apply to audition/interview with the Arts Coordinator or Music Teacher. Students will choose a specialisation in either Performance or Music Production (this includes computer based composition/singer songwriters/sound engineering)

Let Me Entertain You – If you are a performer, composer or music producer, this course will set the scene for the real world of the music industry that requires musicians to:

  • work in various contexts and settings
  • develop their skills to collaborate with other musicians in solo and ensemble performance 
  • record and share compositions/arrangements through the use of music production technologies in the studio or for a live audience
  • build your visual brand and artist profile

Studying Year 11 music sets the groundwork for Stage 2 Ensemble and Solo Performance, and/or Stage 2 Music Explorations. 

Music provides authentic experiences for students to practise and demonstrate the Unley High School values of respect, excellence, diversity and community.

Pathways:

This subject prepares students for further study in music at a tertiary level and supports career pathways in performance, composition, music education, and the broader creative arts industry. Study | Elder Conservatorium of Music | University of Adelaide 

Assessment: 

Assessment at Stage 1 is school based. Students will be assessed against the SACE Stage 1 Music Performance Standards. Students will provide evidence of their learning through four assessments each semester.

  • AT1: Three creative works (eg solo/ensemble performance and or compositing/arranging) (80%)
  • AT2: One musical literacy task (eg musical techniques test, analysis, discussion, evaluation) (20%)

Special Requirements:

Students must:

  • Attend instrumental lessons with a qualified teacher
  • Provide their own instrument or hire an instrument through the school’s hire program

Leads To:

Stage 2 Music Explorations (20 credits) , Stage 2 Music Performance – Ensemble (10 credits) and/or Stage 2 Music Performance – Solo (10 credits).

Instrumental teachers and Music faculty staff will advise the best combination of Stage 2 music subject options for each student.
