Recommended background:
Music Advanced programs are designed for students who have a substantial background in Music. To undertake Stage 1 Music students should have successfully completed a full year of Year 10 Music or apply to audition/interview with the Music faculty.
Content:
This course develops skills in traditional, classical, jazz and/or popular styles of music. Students:
- attend weekly instrumental/vocal lessons with an accredited teacher and maintain regular instrumental/vocal practice
- present solo and/or ensemble performances
- develop musical literacy through the study of theory, aural, harmony, critical analysis, composing and/or arranging
- experiment with, explore, and manipulate musical elements to learn the art of constructing and deconstructing music
- develop and extend their musical literacy skills by:
- understanding the structural and stylistic features of music
- articulating the strategies used for developing instrumental technique
- reflecting on and evaluating their learning in music
Students develop their critical and creative thinking, and their aesthetic appreciation of music, through interpreting and responding to the music of others, and refining and presenting performances and/or compositions.
Music provides opportunities for the development of each student’s:
- creativity

- connection
- confidence
These are achieved through experiences that encourage collaboration and creative problem-solving, the acquisition of skills, knowledge, and understanding, and the development of aesthetic awareness.
Students engage in a selection of the following activities:
- performing
- composing, arranging, improvising
- theory, harmony and aural exercises
- exploring music in contexts
- emerging music technologies
Music provides authentic experiences for students to practise and demonstrate the Unley High School values of respect, excellence, diversity and community.
It is suggested this course be taken in conjunction with Stage 1 Music Performance – Ensemble, an offline, 10 credit SACE subject designed to acknowledge secondary students’ participation and efforts in co-curricular music ensembles.
Assessment:
Assessment at Stage 1 is school based.
Students will be assessed against the SACE Stage 1 Music Performance Standards.
Students will provide evidence of their learning through four assessments each semester. Each assessment type will have a weighting of at least 20%. Each semester students will undertake:
- At least two creative works (eg performance, arrangement, composition)
- At least one musical literacy task (eg musical techniques test, analysis, discussion, evaluation)

Stage 2 Music Explorations (20 credits) , Stage 2 Music Performance – Ensemble (10 credits) and/or Stage 2 Music Performance – Solo (10 credits).
Instrumental teachers and Music faculty staff will advise the best combination of Stage 2 music subject options for each student.
