Stage 1 Music Performance – Ensemble

LEVEL: Stage 1

LENGTH: One Semester or a Full Year

SACE CREDITS: 10 credits (Delivered offline across the full year) – includes free instrumental tuition

RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND: Successful completion of the solo and ensemble performance components of Year 10 Music or by audition/interview with the Music faculty.

Stage 1 Music Performance – Ensemble is designed for students with a substantial background in practical music making (approximately Grade 3 AMEB or equivalent practical standard) and a focused interest in performance as a member of an ensemble.

Content:

This course develops skills in traditional, classical, jazz and/or popular styles of music.

Students will:

  • Attend weekly instrumental/vocal lessons with an accredited teacher and maintain regular instrumental/vocal practice.
  • Participate in regular rehearsals and the performances of an ensemble (most often after school hours) as negotiated with the Music faculty.
  • Experiment with, explore, and manipulate musical elements to learn the art of constructing and deconstructing music.
  • Develop and extend their musical literacy skills by:
    • understanding the structural and stylistic features of music
    • articulating the strategies used for developing instrumental technique
    • reflecting on and evaluating their learning in music

Technique, aural perception, musical sensitivity, critical analysis, awareness of style, structure, historical conventions and musical appreciation are developed in an ensemble performance setting.

Music offers opportunities for the development of each student’s:

  • Creativity
  • Critical thinking
  • Persistence
  • Resilience
  • Self-regulation
  • Identity
  • Connection
  • Confidence

These are achieved through experiences that encourage collaboration and creative problem-solving, the acquisition of skills, knowledge, and understanding, and the development of aesthetic awareness.

Students develop their critical and creative thinking, and their aesthetic appreciation of music, through interpreting and responding to the music of others, and refining and presenting performances and/or compositions.

Music provides authentic experiences for students to practise and demonstrate the Unley High School values of respect, excellence, diversity and community.

It is suggested this course be taken in conjunction with Stage 1 Music wherever possible to maintain pathways to all the Stage 2 Music subjects.

Assessment:

Assessment at Stage 1 is school based.
Students will be assessed against the SACE Stage 1 Music Performance Standards.
Students will provide evidence of their learning through four assessments. Each assessment type will have a weighting of at least 20%. Students will undertake:
