Stage 1 Outdoor Education (Surf & Climb)

LEVEL: Stage 1

SACE Credits: 10 credits

LENGTH: One Semester

Students can choose both Outdoor Education A and B. Outdoor Education A is not a prerequisite for Outdoor Education B

Recommended background: B or above for Year 10 Outdoor Education and a recommendation from Year 10 OE teacher

Content:

During this course students will gain an understanding of ecology, environmental sustainability, cultural perspectives and physical and emotional health, through participating in outdoor activities. 

Activities will include a three-day surfing camp and outdoor rock climbing, that will involve two training sessions within class time to develop skills. Students also develop skills in planning risk and safety management and reflect on environmental practices.

Theoretical assessment tasks covered in the course will include:

  • Planning and Management
  • Outdoor Activities

Assessment:

Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Performance Standards, as outlined by the SACE Board. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types:

About Natural Environments

  • Environmental Investigation: Dune Study (40%)

Experiences in Natural Environments 

  • Surfing camp reflection (20%)
  • Rock climbing reflection and park investigation (40%)

Special Requirements:

This course requires a high degree of personal commitment. Students choosing this course must be prepared to fully commit themselves to the various activities and journeys involved in Outdoor Education. They will be accountable to themselves and to the class for appropriate participation and completion of these activities.

No refunds will be given if a student withdraws from the course or does not attend a camp or excursion without a medical certificate. This is due to costs being calculated and bookings made for each activity before the semester starts.

Students who withdraw from a camp or excursion without a medical certificate will not be recommended for Stage 2 Outdoor Education.

Subject Fee: An estimated cost of $350 covers instructors, equipment hire and transport
