Content:

This is a research-based subject exploring involving class discussion, analysis of various sources, interaction and personal research. Students learn how social, political, historical, environmental, economic and cultural factors affect different societies and how people function and communicate in and across cultural groups. More specifically, they explore the changes in cultural attitudes over time, due to technology and other factors. Popular culture is contextualised in terms of its impact on developing countries due to globalisation and the influence of western culture and values. Students will apply critical thinking when considering their own future by developing skills, values and understanding that enable effective participation as well as increasing awareness of ongoing changes in contemporary society.

Assessment:

Students’ performance will be determined according to the subject’s Performance Standards, as outlined by the SACE Board. Grades A to E will be used for reporting purposes. Students understanding and skills will be assessed in a variety of tasks that may include:

  • One sources analysis task (25%) that utilises both primary and secondary sources to explain why social change and inculturation occurs.
  • One collaborative investigation (25%) into sub cultures, how they are perceived and their impact on Global and Australian society.
  • Two multimodal investigations (50%) into changes in Australian culture since 1950 and the impact western culture has on developing countries.
